Rabl Winery - number one in Sweden!

The Austrian Rudi Rabl from Langenlois was elected ‘Winemaker of the Year 2009’ in Sweden!

Every year the most respected Swedish wine journalists – trendsetters for all wine lovers in Scandinavia - choose the best wines and winemakers of the year. These names are then published in Sweden’s influential wine magazine “Allt om Vin”. The jury’s decision in 2009 was unanimous: Rabl Winery was elected ‘Winery of the Year’.

Festivities in Sweden need careful pre-planning as wines, sparkling wines and other alcoholic beverages above 3.5% vol. are not simply found in every supermarket. The only stores selling these products are run by Sweden’s government-controlled alcohol retail chain and monopolist ‘Systembolaget’. This retail chain offers a permanent and variable range of alcoholic beverages and at least twice a year invites winemakers from all over the world to send in their samples. A number of renowned Swedish wine experts and journalists decide in tastings which wines will be accepted into Systembolaget’s product range. All the tasting notes and novelties are then published in the wine magazine ‘Allt om Vin’, which subsequently elects the best wines and winemakers. Rabl wines are always among the best thanks to their outstanding quality. In 2009 the winery even won four out of five biddings and scored a second place in the fifth. Rabl Winery was elected ‘Winery of the Year 2009’, and its whites were very successful in three different categories: Riesling 2008 won, Riesling Kamptal 2008 came second in ‘Temporary White Listings’, and Grüner Veltliner 2008 scored a remarkable third place in ‘Bag-in-Box’. This rather unusual type of wine packaging consists of a box with a flexible aluminised bag inside. According to Rudi Rabl this specialty of the Swedish wine market has good prospects, as has the Swedish wine market itself. “Sweden has become my major importer”, he says. Rudi Rabl cultivates an area of 75ha and has repeatedly appeared in a number of well-known wine magazines. His wines – ranging from Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Weißburgunder to Zweigelt and St. Laurent - have won countless awards at home and abroad.
